Australian Ransomware Upate - 19th August 2024
Welcome to the first Cyberwise Australian Ransomware Update. As these weekly episodes increase we will start to share insights, as well as data that has been published. The purpose of these videos is not to 'name and shame' the victims, but more to provide information and awareness of a cyber threat that has a significant impact on Australian businesses. Ransomware is unfortunately going up year on year, and is what has prompted this analysis.
Over the past week, we witnessed 3 ransomware attacks, 2 of which were announced by Ransomhub, which have been prolific in their Australian attacks in August. Both of these attacks were in the retail sector, one in precious jewels, and the other in caravans. There was also one further attack this week, not attributable to Ransomhub, that impacted a real estate agency, with nearly $500m in annual revenue, and nearly 500 employees, with the exfiltrated information already available for sale.
As we continue to prepare these weekly analysis videos we will share further statistics and information as it relates to the attack vectors. Ransomware attacks still often start with a social engineering attack, such as a phishing email, and this is why we need to sure us, and our staff, or anyone that has access to sensitive information is educated and aware.
If you ever have any cybersecurity questions, or require a digital forensic, or forensic accounting investigation, please reach out to the Cyberwise team.
Until next week, thanks for joining me, and remember to stay Cyber Wise.
